Bike fit basics

Bike size versus bike fit: what is the difference?

Bike size chooses the frame. Bike fit shapes the position within the safe adjustment range of that frame.

01BIKE SIZE

Sizing narrows down the frame before you fine-tune the position

A size recommendation compares rider measurements and riding direction with the broad proportions of a bike. Labels such as small, medium, or 54 cm are only starting points because brands and bike styles use those labels differently.

  • Compare the manufacturer geometry for the exact model
  • Check standover, stack, reach, and intended use
  • Treat a calculator range as a shortlist, not a purchase guarantee
  • Test the real bike whenever possible
02BIKE FIT

Fitting works with the adjustable position on the actual bike

Once the frame is chosen, saddle height, saddle setback, handlebar height, and reach can shape how the bike feels. Those adjustments still have mechanical limits. A fit cannot make every frame work for every rider, and it should not hide a frame-size concern behind extreme component changes.

03WHICH DO I NEED?

Use sizing before buying and fitting when you are setting up or reassessing a bike

If you are comparing bikes, start with the free size calculator and the geometry from each exact model. If you already own the bike and want to understand its current position, start with the free bike-fit setup check. If the bike appears clearly too small, too large, or outside a safe adjustment range, pause the fit and compare frames with a qualified fitter or the manufacturer.

An uncertain result should stay uncertain. It should not become a recommendation to buy another bike without enough information.
